APPRENTICE SUBSTATION/METERMAN
CITY OF CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent and at least 18 years old. Must have physical and mental attributes to climb and work aloft. Must have the ability to learn the layout, functions, and operations of the electrical equipment involved.

Applicant must be a non-smoker and non-tobacco user, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff, etc. for the duration of their employment at the City.

Applicant must possess a valid State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain CDL within six (6) months from the completion of the City's in-house CDL entry-level driver training program.

Applicant must learn the layout, functions, and operations of the electrical equipment involved; maintain the physical and mental attributes to climb and work aloft; work from simple drawings and make simple field sketches; and operate two-way radio communication equipment; learn the layout, functions, and operation of the electrical equipment and circuit connections of the transmission and distribution system.
- Learning to climb and work aloft.
- Anticipating the requirements of employees working aloft in substations and supplying them with tools and equipment.
- Loading, unloading, moving, and handling substation equipment; placing or storing tools and materials in their proper places.
- Installing and removing substation equipment such as switches, insulators, bushings, etc. (with an “A” Substation/Meterman).
- Installing, removing, maintaining, and repairing secondary circuits within substations.
- Operating and cleaning department vehicles as assigned.
- Reporting all failures on items requiring attention involving vehicles or equipment.
- Performing work in the shop as directed such as work on distribution transformers, processing oil, and cleaning tools and equipment.
- Learning first aid and accepted methods of resuscitation.
- Learning and practicing safety methods of the Electric Dept.
- Learning methods of visually checking rubber goods.
- Learning to check, clean, and maintain batteries.
- Taking calls at a desk occasionally during regular employees’ absence.
- Repairing and cleaning of de-energized meters and instruments such as voltmeters, ammeters, watthour meters, etc.
- Learning safety regulations and proper use of firefighting equipment.
- Learning to install, change, remove, and inspect self-contained single-phase watthour meters.
- Learning to bypass leads on circuits without interrupting services.
- Learning to inspect installations for evidence of diversion and other irregularities such as foreign and improper connections.
- Learning to operate computerized test equipment.
- Learning to verify the suitability of single-phase watthour meters and associated equipment assigned to installations, and checking customers' connected load.
- Learning to make required meters and other service reports.
- Learning to inspect, test, check, adjust, and repair all types of single-phase self-contained watthour meters.
- Learning to perform miscellaneous maintenance assembly, repair, wiring, or construction work in metering as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORK HOURS: Monday - Friday, 7 AM - 3 PM, or as assigned by the Superintendent.
